ABOUT US
ORIGINS: We are makers...We make things...We build things.
At Yakū|Shima Maker Workshop, woodworking isn't just what we do—it's who we are. The workshop is named in honor of two great influences in my life: my grandfather, Charlie Yakubik (Yakū), and George Nakashima (Shima), whose design philosophies guide everything we create. From a young age, working alongside my grandfather taught me the value of craftsmanship, while Nakashima's reverence for natural materials has shaped my approach to design.
The creation of each piece begins with the tree itself. Whenever possible, I source wood from trees that have fallen naturally or have reached the end of their life, as well as from sustainably managed forests. I prefer North American hardwoods, especially those from within 500 miles of the workshop, choosing wood based on its grain, color, and texture to tell a unique story in each piece.

My designs draw from a blend of Scandinavian, European, and Japanese design traditions, all influenced by American sensibilities and local materials. Whether using traditional hand tools or modern power tools, the aim is always to bring out the inherent beauty of the wood while respecting its natural qualities.
Sustainability is central to everything I create. I prioritize the use of non-toxic, low- or zero-VOC glues and finishes, ensuring the work is both safe and environmentally responsible. In my workshop, honoring the craft means respecting the environment and the health of those who use my furniture and functional pieces. This approach is even more critical when crafting food-related items like cutting boards, where sustainability and safety are of utmost importance.
Every item I create tells a story—a story that begins in the forest and ends in a home, office, or gathering space, bringing beauty, functionality, and a deep connection to nature.
These are the core values that guide everything I do at Yakū|Shima Maker Workshop. The respect for craft, the thoughtful selection of materials, the careful balance between tradition and innovation—it’s all deeply personal to me. I believe in creating pieces that not only serve a function but also tell a story. And in doing so, I commit to upholding these principles with every project, big or small.
With commitment,

Michael Antenora
